I am currently working on this project with Eric Plessett (UNCW class of 2021). Eric started working in the Pawlik lab in 2018 as an directed independent study (DIS) student at UNCW, and is one of my first undergraduate mentees. During his time in the lab, he has helped make hundreds of 3D models of the giant barrel sponge Xestospongia muta. We made this poster to summarize an interesting side project that came about as we processed 3D models for the larger X. muta monitoring dataset. To summarize, we noticed that sponges that were recovering from storm damage seemed to grow differently from healthy individuals, and we wanted to quantify that more precisely. As of summer 2022, we are working on writing up this research for publication.
