It has been rewarding to give back to the communities that have welcomed me over the course of my education. While living in the US Virgin Islands, I volunteered at various UVI Research Day and Reef Fest activities, and organized an interactive Caribbean sponge exhibit to teach local students about these unique animals (pictured top left). I also volunteered as a diver with the national park service, to assist in relocating corals prior to restoration of a historic local marine railway, and maintaining acoustic receiver arrays around Buck Island National Park, STX (pictured top center). And while living in Miami, I volunteered for Ocean Kids and helped with face painting and running the "radical reef" exhibit where we showed kids how to build coral reefs out of marshmallows, pretzels and sprinkles (pictured top right).
When I first moved to North Carolina, I volunteered for a local high school science competition and became more involved with online outreach, including running the twitter account for the 2020 benthic ecology meeting (this event was unfortunately cancelled at the start of the Covid pandemic).
During 2020-2022, I volunteered as a guest scientist virtual lecturer in the Zoology class at Effingham college and career academy where I got to talk about my (very early) career as a coral reef ecologist! I love talking to high schoolers about what I do, so if you have any interest in having a virtual lecturer for your class, please get in contact!
